Run by local teachers, the classes use a specially-created series of material designed with students in low-income communities in mind.

Called ‘As aventuras de Marcos e Maria’ (‘The adventures of Marcos and Maria’), the material has the folllowing features:capa

  • Based on a story (in Portuguese) about two cousins who travel to English-speaking destinations
  • Students learn words¬†and expressions in English that are based around themes of citizenship
  • At the end of each unit, students take part in group projects and discussion circles about citizenship themes, which help children develop valuable transferable skills and critical thinking.
  • The characters that are representative of the participants themselves, thus helping them identify with the material and increasing motivation

In addition to colour copies of the material and folders to keep it in, snacks  (biscuits, fruit and juice) are provided at the end of each session.
